January is a month for reflection, and few designs reflect the values of durability, simplicity and British craftsmanship quite like Beryl by Woods Ware.

Originally produced by Wood & Sons of Burslem, Woods Ware became one of the most recognisable names in Staffordshire pottery during the 1930s and 1940s. Designed as part of Britain’s Utility Ware movement, Beryl was created to be practical, affordable and long-lasting – qualities that still resonate today.

What is Woods Ware?

Woods Ware refers to a group of ceramic ranges produced by Wood & Sons, including the much-loved Beryl, Jasmine and Iris patterns. These wares were found in homes, schools, cafés and government buildings across Britain and were valued for their strength and timeless design.

Among them, Beryl by Woods Ware stands out for its distinctive soft green ‘Beryl’ glaze and clean, functional form. During the Second World War, Wood & Sons was designated a Nucleus Firm, meaning production continued under government direction to supply essential ceramics to public institutions. This places Beryl firmly within Britain’s wartime and social history.

Why Beryl Still Matters

Collectors continue to seek out Woods Ware Beryl not only for its aesthetic appeal, but for what it represents – resilience, utility and everyday British life. Its frequent appearances in period dramas have only strengthened its place in the collective memory.

Today, Beryl by Woods Ware remains a powerful link between past and present: a reminder that good design, made well, never dates.

Looking Ahead

As interest in heritage design and Staffordshire pottery continues to grow, Woods Ware is being rediscovered by a new generation of collectors and enthusiasts. Preserving these stories – and the craftsmanship behind them – ensures that the legacy of Wood & Sons remains very much alive.
