Master Potters for over 300 years
Wood & Sons was one of Stoke-on-Trent’s most renowned pottery manufacturers, shaping the world of ceramics for over 300 years. Founded in Burslem, the Mother Town of the Potteries, the company became known for its high-quality earthenware and timeless designs.
The Wood family played a pivotal role in Staffordshire’s pottery industry, evolving from skilled figure makers into a thriving business that employed thousands. As noted in British Potters and Pottery Today (1956):
“For considerably over two centuries the Wood family of Burslem has been in the forefront of those who are memorable in ceramic history. Early in the eighteenth century, as every collector’s manual informs us, there were three brothers, Ralph, Aaron, and Moses Wood.”
Among Wood & Sons most enduring creations was Beryl Ware, introduced in the 1930s. Its simple yet elegant design made it a household staple, found in homes, schools, cafés, village halls and ministry departments across Britain. Renowned for its durability and simple design, Beryl remains an icon of British ceramic history, loved by collectors and vintage enthusiasts alike. Keep an eye out—you might just spot it in a BBC or ITV period drama!
Inspired by this remarkable heritage, we’ve created a range of Beryl tea towels and greeting cards, celebrating the craftsmanship and legacy of Wood & Sons. Whether you’re a dedicated collector or just discovering its story, we invite you to explore our website and keep the tradition alive.
“The Wood family was a major force in the development of Staffordshire wares from a family of figure makers to an organised industry employing 1000’s. They became a celebrated family of potters.”
